Finally with the season over Josh Howard will go under and hopefully be fixed for a full season. On Friday J-Ho had surgeries on his left ankle, and left wrist. Now the next step is rehabbing and getting back into shape for the 09-10 season. I hope Josh get's healthy not just for the Mavs but for himself.

Key Offseason Free Agents
The Dallas Mavericks have a few key free agents for there team. Let's take a look and breakdown the situation at hand for our team.
Ryan Hollins, Nick Fazekas, Gerald Green, Jason Kidd, James Singleton, & Brandon Bass are the Free Agent's as our team tries to build for the 2009 NBA Regular Season.
Keep or Don't Keep
Nick Fazekas: Honestly I didn't know he was still on the team but his salary and everything else really don't matter. This is a good $700k coming off our books, thank god. (Don't Keep)
Gerald Green: One of the most if not the most athletic player on the Dallas Mavericks, Green proved throughout the year he has the talent, the question still is does he have the IQ? (Don't Keep)
James Singleton: This guy here is a very versatile player who was placed at Center, Power Forward, & Small Forward throughout the year. If Dallas can keep him cheap then we should bring him back. (Keep)
Brandon Bass: Throughout the year Bass was supposed to be the breakout player everyone thought he could've been after his performance the year before. His numbers didn't change much but that could've been because Carlisle was learning his players and vice versa. Bass as we all know can be explosive, and has developed a mid range shot. His aggressiveness has been questioned a few times because he is not consistent, but his value might be inflated this offseason. If big offers are not on the table for Bass we might be able to get him back for one more year cheap. (Keep)
Ryan Hollins: I don't know too many people who have stood up to Shaq like this guy, but Hollins did it and boy was it fun. Ryan Hollins has the height and just needs the weight to be more of an impact. The problem with having Hollins gain that weight could take away from his athleticism, and his shot blocking abilities. Another thing Ryan needs to develop is a post game on the offensive end. If he can do these things in the offseason he could be a dangerous young big man for the future. (Keep)
Jason Kidd: Finally we speak on the man everyone has been wondering about since we got him. Kidd is not 25 years old anymore but he really doesn't have to be. The Mavs could infuse talent through the draft or through some expiring contracts. Barea showed he was capable to back up Kidd, and Terry also serves as a PG at times if the Mavs need it. With Kidd on his last legs, I think his impact leaving the Mavericks could be pretty severe because of the leadership, and defensive mindset he brings into this team. I know at times it was not apparent, but who else did Barea, Hollins, and the other guys talk too. I'm pretty sure it was Jason..... (Keep)

Shaq as a Mav?
The rumors have started up again with Shaq coming to the Dallas Mavericks. First thing first is what will we do with a old Shaq? Second do we want to absorb his salary for a year? And Third, does this make sense if we don't re-sign Jason Kidd? All three of these questions I will answer as I break down a potential deal presented by Hoopsworld.
First with the old Shaq question, O'Neal posted his best scoring numbers in 3 years, averaging close to 18 points per game. Shaquille's rebounding was down from the previous year, but it was still a solid 8-9 rebounds per game. When it comes to the number's, Shaq proved last year that even with gas prices high he still has some Diesel left in his tank.
Second, O'Neals salary is a whopping $20 million per year with his contract ending in the sacred offseason of 2010. With this cap figure Mark Cuban is for sure going to pay a huge amount of luxury tax, but as an owner who is willing to do a lot to win, this doesn't seem like a problem for the Mavericks. On the other end of things, to bring in a salary like Shaq, HoopsWorld has brought the option of Erick Dampier and Jerry Stackhouse which could be big cap cleaners for the Phoenix Suns. With that $17 million coming off the books very soon or close to it, the Suns will find immediate relief while they prepare themselves for a busy 2010 with Amar'e as a potential free agent.
Third, bringing in Shaq without Jason Kidd makes this deal somewhat worthless, but then again what did Stack and Damp do last year? Exactly what I was thinking, Nothing. So losing Kidd and bringing in Shaq could work, but will Terry, and Barea be able to find him? I don't think so, Jason is one of the best passers in the league ever, and he tried many times to get Damp involved. Also, you cannot forget the fact that Josh Howard is never shy to give it to his big man, and Shaq could be the receiver on many alley-oops. Plus another benefit of having Shaq with Kidd could be the inside/outside game. Inside Shaq can be a beast, while outside Kidd can hit his 3's. Throw in a slasher in Josh, and a pure shooter in Dirk and I smell trouble for others. To sum it up we need Kidd with Shaq to push for a ring.
After all this analysis, I do feel bringing in Shaq for one more year could work for the Dallas Mavericks. As always injuries are a concern, and the type of deal Kidd wants could hinder, or help with bringing in Shaquille.
